Despacito is a song from 2017 released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi. It became the top streamed and downloaded song across the globe within 6 months. The song was a mix of reggaeton and pop music that attracted attention to Latin Music but as well reggaeton. Billboard's Top 100 featured two songs which were Spanish generally, and four tracks in 2016. At the peak of Despacito's popularity in 2017 however 19 mostly Spanish songs made it into the Top 100 as well, and by 2020 there were 41 of them. Justin Bieber re-mixed Despacito with a Spanish-language version in 2017 shortly after which popular artists began working with reggaeton acts. Drake teamed with Bad Bunny to produce MIA (2018) and Madonna was a part of Medellin together with Maluma (2019). The year 2000 saw a number of reggaeton performers were lamenting the genre's direction toward the mainstream, but a new generation, led by Rauw Alejandro, sought to keep reggaeton evolving. He often incorporated elements from electronic dance music and other styles.
